Last week, Structurlam Mass Timber Corporation was fortunate to be honoured at the 14th annual 2018 Wood Design Awards, an event held to acknowledge excellence in wood building and design, and recognize leadership and innovation in wood use. The Wood Design Awards are presented by Wood WORKS! BC, the Canadian Wood Council and its BC member associations; with support from Natural Resources Canada and Forestry Innovation Investment.

This year’s awards featured 100 nominations in 14 categories, spotlighting projects of all types and sizes which demonstrate outstanding structural achievement using wood. The event showcased tremendous talent in wood design and building that has never been seen before, including tall multi-unit residential buildings.
Structurlam’s Brock Commons Tallwood House was the most celebrated project of the 2018 Wood Design Awards in BC, with a win in a record three categories, including the Engineer Award, the Architect Award, and Wood Innovation Award. The residential building provides housing for 404 UBC students and is the tallest wood structure in the world at 53 meters tall. The mass timber structure was completed in just 66 days, with 1,302 Glulam columns and 464 CLT panels installed during the building process. The tallest mass timber building in the world sits at 18-storeys, and has laid the foundation for future tall residential wood buildings across the globe.

Penticton Lakeside Resort West Wing is another Structurlam project to have received recognition, taking home the award for Commercial Wood Design. The 70-room expansion of the Penticton Lakeside Resort features Structurlam’s cross-laminated timber.
The Jury’s Choice Award was presented to Bill Downing, President of Structurlam Mass Timber Corporation of Penticton, who has been a wood industry leader and advocate for wood for more than 30 years. This year marks Bill’s last at Structurlam, as he passes the torch to Chief Executive Officer Hardy Wentzel.
